At the time of Spix and Martius there was no decimal system or international terminology. On the contrary, all values, measures and weights were very variable across countries, provinces and even markets. Moreover, the denominations varied, appearing both different with equal meaning, and equal with different meaning. Up to the present time England, the U.S. and other countries have kept their old units, not adopting the decimal system. Accordingly, all data and values about this book are rough estimates. As much as possible, they were based on the calculations and news of Martius himself.
